When "SIRENS" was screened I was surprised that, aside from a Turkish distributor who wanted to cut scenes with politics and sex, which I didn't allow, very few people were troubled by the contradictory characters of my soldiers. Not even natives of the wild Cretan village of Zoniana, who rushed to the Astoria Cinema in Heraklion to see their fellow villager, setting a house record. The climate was probably not suitable for diagnoses of self-knowledge issues after winning the EURO CUP, the electoral victories of the NEW DEMOCRACY party, the impeccable organization of the Olympics, the successful rejection of the Annan Plan, and the - unfortunately unilateral - recognition of the Republic of Cyprus by Europe, etc. We were still confident that the Hellenes are the bravest and most intelligent people in the world. In 2006 when I started writing "COOL" the image of blissful prosperity had begun to crumble and the problem of our "strong economy" and the coming bankruptcy appeared, but also the extent of interwoven special interests, corruption and lawlessness: extra-judicial collusions, nepotism and manipulations of bonds, party favoritism in appointments, telephone wiretaps, kidnapping of migrants, beatings of demonstrators by the police, and more. This image annoyed many viewers and one critic was indignant that she couldn’t find a single positive hero in the movie.

PLOT

The narrative follows the parallel, and often interwoven, stories, and the common fortune of some very different young people during a 24-hour summer day, from behind prison bars to the escalators of the Venizelos Airport, and the beaches of the Saronic Gulf to the pasture lands of Mt.Psiloritis in Crete.

All the heroes have inherited various problems from their corrupt parents. Uninvolved until now, their loss of youthful bliss brings on a sudden and forced 'adulthood'.

Through tragicomic situations and after a night of extortion and intrigues, a staged and an apparent death and a redemptive murder, in the light of the next day the company is no longer the same, as all of them have, willingly or unwillingly, faced their demons.

SCENES

Instead of small action scenes Ι prefered to upload the section after the head titles of the film, where the main characters are introduced, the scene in which the vicious father Mandrakas first appears, and a sequence in the middle of the movie when Stavrakomanios returns to his village and meets the rest at the MANDRAGORAS sports club. The fourth passage is the gang’s meeting in the cafeteria of the Mandrakion Hospital, after Mandrakas meets his maker.

MAKING OF

WORK PHOTOS

Although several professional cameras were circulating on the set, most of the photos I found in my folders, if judged by their resolution, seem to have come from mobile telephones. The last but one, unknown who shot it, became my most published photo ever. The last, also of unknown source, is the most prophetic, since three weeks later and a little farther north Dr. Dimas –long life to him- implanted two stents in my descending artery. The private nurse is Vaso, the usual costume designer.
